RACI Matrix Tool

A RACI matrix is a responsibility assignment chart that maps every activity in a project or process against the people involved, marking each as Responsible, Accountable, Consulted or Informed. It removes the two biggest causes of stalled work: nobody owning a task, and everybody owning it. Use this free RACI matrix tool to build the chart in minutes, get it validated automatically, and print it as a one-page summary. It works well alongside our procurement governance and procurement transformation services, and sits with our other free procurement tools.

Name your project or process, add up to six roles and ten activities, and assign R, A, C or I in each cell. Generate a colour-coded RACI chart with automatic checks: every activity gets exactly one Accountable owner and at least one Responsible, and no role is silently overloaded.

Your RACI chart

R = Responsible (does the work), A = Accountable (owns the outcome, exactly one per activity), C = Consulted, I = Informed.

Workload by role

Green shows Responsible assignments, navy shows Accountable. A role carrying most of the R and A load is a delivery bottleneck and a single point of failure.

What your RACI suggests

    Roles and accountabilities causing friction?

A RACI only works if it reflects how decisions actually get made. We help procurement and commercial teams design governance that sticks: approval workflows, delegated authorities and operating models, implemented hands-on rather than left in a slide deck.

    RACI matrix tool FAQs

    What is a RACI matrix?

A RACI matrix is a responsibility assignment chart that maps every activity in a project or process against the roles involved, marking each as Responsible, Accountable, Consulted or Informed. It makes ownership explicit so tasks do not stall through having no owner, or too many.

    What does RACI stand for?

RACI stands for Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and Informed. Responsible does the work, Accountable owns the outcome, Consulted provides two-way input before decisions, and Informed is kept up to date one-way.

What is the difference between Responsible and Accountable?

Responsible is the person who does the work; there can be several per activity. Accountable is the single person who owns the outcome and answers for it, and there should be exactly one per activity. One person can be both, but accountability can never be shared.

How do you create a RACI matrix?

List the activities down one side and the roles across the top, then assign R, A, C or I in each cell. Check that every activity has exactly one Accountable and at least one Responsible, challenge any activity with a long list of Consulted roles, and walk the finished chart through with every named role in the room.

What is the difference between RACI and RASCI?

RASCI adds a fifth role, Supportive, for people who provide resources or assistance to the Responsible role. Most organisations find standard RACI sufficient; RASCI helps where delivery depends heavily on shared service teams.

Is this RACI matrix tool really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no email gate and no data stored. Everything runs in your browser and you can print or save your RACI chart as a PDF.
